Please note, this article is specific for Windows 2000 Server and RTF Documents. RTF documents and Cover Pages hang in conversion and have “Preconversion Failed” errors when Wordpad is used as the printto/conversion application. Check that the file type associations in Windows Explorer shows that Wordpad is set as the application to open RTF files.

By default Windows doesn’t always populate the open, print and printto registry keys for rtffile with quotes in the appropriate places.

Check to make sure that with-in the registry Wordpad.exe is configured to be the default application for printto functions for RTF documents. To check this, go into Regedit or Regedt32 and check the key:

Please note: These changes are ONLY for Windows 2000 Server

The value is a REG_SZ and may read:

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE /pt "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"
%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE /pt "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"

The placement of the quotes is essential. The value should read:

"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" /pt "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"
“%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" /pt "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"
